IIl Brera FC è un club calcistico, fondato nel 2000, che - nonostante sia sempre rimasto nel dilettantismo - è unanimemente riconosciuto come «la terza squadra di Milano». Tale definizione non deriva dal ranking calcistico, ma dalla forte sovraesposizione mediatica ottenuta dal Brera in relazione ai tanti progetti, prevalentemente a sfondo sociale, realizzati attraverso il calcio. Gli indici di notorietà del brand - più volte misurati e certificati - sono molto significativi e definiscono con chiarezza la percezione del Brera come «terza squadra di Milano». Il focus del club è sempre stato l’utilizzo innovativo del calcio come esperimento sociale, sportivo, culturale e comunicativo.
Recentemente, a seguito di un’iniziativa di investitori americani, è avvenuta la quotazione al NASDAQ di una società irlandese (Brera Holdings Ltd) che racchiude le attività esistenti del Brera FC ma soprattutto è finalizzata a implementarne una strategia di sviluppo. Tale strategia è, ovviamente, tesa ad entrare nel calcio professionistico. La scelta, tuttavia, non è quella di scalare la piramide calcistica italiana (un progetto costoso, difficile e probabilmente velleitario), bensì di creare una sorta di «club globale» con l’headquarter a Milano e diverse squadre a marchio Brera: di prima o seconda divisione in paesi europei calcisticamente minori; di divisioni anche inferiori nei continenti calcisticamente emergenti (Africa, Asia, Sudamerica), in questi ultimi con un approccio ESG. In aggiunta al calcio, Brera Holdings ha recentemente intrapreso una strategia multisport.
